As NSW's second-largest city, Newcastle follows the same extended discount cycle as Sydney — an 18 to 28 day swing with a sharp jump then a slow grind down — but the timing can lag Sydney by a few days as the majors roll changes up the M1. That makes Sydney's cycle position a decent leading indicator for the Hunter.
