Where these prices come from
Every price on this map comes from an official government fuel price scheme — not crowdsourcing. PetrolPulse pulls each state and territory feed every 30 minutes, covering more than 8,000 stations nationally. That means no reliance on other drivers spotting and reporting a price: if a retailer changes their board, the change flows through their state's mandatory reporting scheme and onto this map.
Freshness varies by state, because each scheme works differently:

How "cheapest" is worked out
Stations are ranked by price for your selected fuel type, with distance as the tiebreaker when two stations match. The single cheapest station in your results is highlighted, and map pins are colour-coded in up to three green tiers so you can see at a glance which stations are near the bottom of the local range — not just the one absolute cheapest.
One honest caveat: the cheapest station isn't always the cheapest trip. A 10 km round-trip detour to save 2c/L on a 50-litre fill saves about $1 and burns close to a litre of fuel getting there. The tiers exist for exactly this trade-off — a near-cheapest station on your normal route usually wins.
Timing often matters more than location. In most capitals, prices move in multi-week discounting cycles with 15–30c/L between peak and trough — far more than the spread between stations on any given day. If you can choose when to fill up, check your city's forecast first:

Stations are ranked cheapest-first, the single cheapest is highlighted, and prices come from official government feeds refreshed every 30 minutes.
How often are the prices on the map updated?
PetrolPulse ingests every state's official fuel price feed every 30 minutes, around the clock. In states with real-time reporting laws (NSW, ACT, QLD, SA and, since April 2026, Tasmania), the price on the map is typically within minutes of what the price board shows. In WA — and, since April 2026, the NT — prices are committed a day ahead and locked for 24 hours, so the listed price is the price for the day. Victoria is the exception: its public feed publishes a daily cap that runs about a day behind.
Why does a Victorian station's price sometimes differ at the pump?
Victoria's fuel scheme publishes a daily price cap — the maximum a station has committed to charge that day — rather than live price changes. Stations may sell below their cap without updating the feed, so the listed VIC price is a ceiling, not always the exact bowser price.
Which fuel types can I search?
Unleaded 91, E10, Premium 95, Premium 98 and Diesel. Selecting Diesel also shows stations that only carry Premium Diesel (marked with a "Prem" tag), so truck and 4WD drivers don't miss stations that stock one but not the other.
Is the cheapest station always my best choice?
Not always. Driving 5 km out of your way to save 2 cents a litre on a 50-litre tank saves about $1 — and burns roughly that much in extra fuel. The map's colour tiers exist so you can weigh price against distance: a second-tier station on your normal route usually beats the absolute cheapest one across town.
